I see a lot of opera all over the US and the world, and this producdtion of The Dwarf is one of the most gorgeous productions I've ever seen. The music, sets, costumes and performances are heart-stopping and provide one of those rare experiences in theatre--where there is discovery of a great work and it is stunningly produced. Kudos to James Conlon for bringing this to LA and for his amazing contribution to the musical life of LA.

A double bill of two one act operas by artists who were silenced by the nazis is a stunner. The Broken Jug, an opera composed in Theresienstad, a "model" nazi concentration camp is a short tale subtly crtiquing tyranny. The Dwarf by Zemlinsky is a post-romantic masterpiece that has yet to take its rightful place in the cannon. James Conlon's sumptuous conducting,spellbinding direction and a once-in-a-lifetime performance by Roderick Dixon (better known for doing cross-over CDs and PBS specials) as the dwarf make this a must-see.
