Although it needs a tweak or two, playwright T.S. Cook's passionately pro-union drama about an American union rep jailed in Russia while trying to meet with the fugitive owner of his locked-out West Virginia steel mill serves as a clarion warning against governmental systems that reward unfettered greed over character.

This is what intimate theatre is all about! Director James Renolds' astute use of a singer/guitarist as a thread joins together a perfectly cast ensemble delivering brilliantly nuanced performances full of impact, thought and grace. Channeling his Russian alter(ed) ego, Robert Trebor's facial expressions, inflections and husky delivery speaks volumes. Vaughn Armstrong as an incarcerated Union representative goes on an emotional roller coaster which is palpable throughout. The plentiful humor is impressively balanced by the actors as it never detracts, but rather impacts the profundity of the intelligent and insightful script by T.S. Cook.

Ravensridge at the Freemont center is probably the best play we have seen this season. Our friends felt the same. It has an intelligent and sophisticated script and the direction and the acting are superb.

Ravensridge is relevant, thought provoking, unabashedly political, and entertaining to boot. In a class A production, director James Reynolds has assembled a crackerjack cast and design team who together make T.S. Cook’s intelligent (and funny) play come alive. Absolutely convincing as Russian Major Davidykov, Robert Trebor captures the Major’s sternness, his humanity, and his sense of humor as well. Giving an intense and impassioned performance as union leader Will Torrey is Vaughn Armstrong, the splitting image of a West Virginian miner. Deserving special mention is Kim Story as the Troubadour, who strums and sings Appalachian folk songs between scenes, just the right mood setter. This fine stage production of Oscar nominee T.S. Cook’s provocative script is well worth seeing. Read my full review at www.LAStageScene.com.
