Dakota, a project from restaurateurs Tim and Liza Goodell, who also own Meson G, doesn't reinvent the contemporary chophouse genre (that's been done already by Tom Colicchio at Craft in New York). I admit I was expecting something spectacular from Tim Goodell, who dazzled at Aubergine, his now-closed Newport Beach French-California restaurant. But after 18 years behind the stoves, he seems to have switched direction and seems hellbent on teasing out his inner entrepreneur -- with mixed results. It's as if in staking his claim to this piece of Hollywood turf, he's decided to set his sights quite a bit lower than he has previously. That's exactly what it means to go Hollywood.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT SPENDING ABOUT 650.00 FOR A MEAL, WE FOUND SEVERAL TIMES PIECES OF HAIR IN OUR 63.00 LOBSTER, AND AGAIN, PIECES OF HAIR IN OUR SPINACH AND I WILL NEVER RETURN THERE....NEVER....

We ate at Dakota's on our last visit to L.A. and found that the overall less than what we were promised. I ordered the porterhouse and thought it was tough and flavorless. My wife had the filel and also thought it lacked flavor. For what what we paid for dinner and the waiter holding his hand out ,I was very disappointed in Dakota over all. I will always be a loyal Gibson's steakhouse fan

Way too dark inside. It took 20 minutes for someone to come to our table! No apology. I had the foie gras which was good, he had the Maine lobster appetizer which was ok. I had the rib eye steak which was fine, but my friend's pork chop was delicious. Sides were bad too. Dessert was a joke, ice cream profiteroles which seemed like they came from Thriftys. Service was really bad, I would never go back there, the food wasn't anything special. Very noisy. RIpoff.

Ambience An old Hollywood hotel restaurant turned contemporary chophouse dressed up in black leather and suede. The crowd is a mix of hotel guests and the ferociously trendy style set looking for the next hotspot. This is it, for the moment.
Best dishes Kumamoto oysters, onion rings, steak tartare, Caesar salad made tableside, veal chop, duck breast and leg confit, hanger steak, maitake mushrooms, creamed spinach, potato gratin.
Best table One of the svelte leather booths along the windows.
Of Note Validated valet parking, $6.
Prices Dinner appetizers, $10-$30; fish/shellfish, $30-$60; meat/poultry, $24-$40; sides, $7-$8.
Service Can't decide whether to put on attitude or go with the flow.
Wine list A work in progress with more interesting choices than many hotel lists. Corkage, $20.
