Wine bars are popping up all over the Southland like mushrooms after a rain shower. Santa Monica, usually so quick to adopt any trend, has been lagging behind, though. But with the opening of Rustic Canyon Wine Bar and Seasonal Kitchen on Wilshire Boulevard near 11th Street, the city by the sea gets a wine bar and a real restaurant all in one neat package.

There Is A Place Like Home Rustic Canyon feels reminiscent of those La Scala Boutique days in the late 70s. Back then, that place was my 2nd home. Rustic Canyon isn't Italian cuisine, but its intimate setting and the best chopped salad I've had in years takes me back to a bygone era I terribly miss. And those pastries: exquisite mysteries that make a girl with a no-sugar rule feel lured into carbo-load. If I can't go back in time, I can look forward to eating at Rustic Canyon SOON!

Overpriced, WAY too noisy and the "no substitutions" policy translates into "the customer is always wrong" -- who needs that? Some good dishes: tomato soup, sea bass, fried green tomatoes, succotash. Some forgettable: tasteless vegetable lasagne, underwhelmining burgers, bland creamy polenta. Slow service; food didn't come up at the right times. We won't go back.

We had a great time, with out any problems or issues. We were 30 min late and our table was ready. The hostess and waitress were very sweet and helpful. The food was great and the wine was good. We had a booth which was quieter, so the noise was not an issue, but our table was somewhat cramped. This is a gourmet-ish restaurant in pricey santa moncia so you need to expect an expensive outing. 4 of us spent $300 out the door, which is typical on the west side for an evening out.
