ALMG Chicago, ILKatsu is head and shoulders above all other sushi places in Chicago. This really is authentic Japanese food, not the pale imitation you find at the other trendier places in the city. My mom is Japanese and was amazed by the food - she kept saying she felt like she was in Japan. It's also a wonderful, warm atmosphere. The owners spent a lot of time chatting with us and were SO friendly and nice - they chose the freshest items for us and it was all incredible. Some of the fish was flown in from tsujiki market in Tokyo and was beautifully presented. It is expensive, but given how much you can pay for a really crappy sushi experience at other hyped up places, it's so worth it. March 2, 2007
Tomjac Chicago, ILI have had sushi, sashimi, and maki in Japan, Hawaii, California, Florida and Manhattan. Katsu stacks up pure and simple. The owner and his staff genuinely care and it shows in this simple but elegant restaurant with great food, great service and a relaxing atmosphere. The spicy tuna roll and fried oyster appetizer where outstanding. Domo Katsu. April 18, 2006
Andrea Chicago, ILSorry this restuarant does not live up to all the hype I've heard. While the sushi certainly was above average, the problem with Katsu is the price. It is very expensive but the quality of the fish does not make up for it -the fatty tuna came highly recommended and was a huge disappointment. Also considering the lackluster service, atmostphere and location, you leave scratching your head wondering how they get away with it. March 22, 2006
Anne Chicago, ILKatsu is the place to go if you want a delicious fresh authentic Japanese meal without all the trendy hype. There is no pulsing dance music and no "fusion" here, and it's not where the pretty people hang out. but it is where real Japanese people go to eat the highest quality fish and traditional Japanese dishes. Try the mushroom soup, a fragrant and complex broth only for those who appreciate subtlety! Yup, it's 14 bucks for a cup and a half of broth, and it's worth it if you're a real foodie. Tom Niles, ILKatsu is thus far the best sushi I've ever had. They offer tradional sushi of the highest quality. Their fish is very fresh, served in larger cuts, and draped over the rice patti. Cooked items are seasoned with great care. The quality of their rice is perfect... unbelivably tender, moist but not soggy and practically disolves on your tounge. This restaurant is family owned so naturally the environment provides an intimate "at home" dining experience. The service however has room for improvement. Arrival without reservations will leave you waiting for sometime and with no attention. Also, the waitstaff is somewhat curt and a little pushy though their manager is much more polite and hospitable. Overall the food is unforgettable. If you're willing to pay extra for dinner this place is absolutely worth every penny. Return to Katsu Japanese Cuisine venue details
