Visitors to Los Angeles note the wistful glint in the eye of a native at the mention of El Cholo. In business on Western Avenue for over 80 years, the Los Angeles restaurant now boasts a twin in its spacious Santa Monica sister location. Both restaurants are immensely popular and tend to get crowded, but the food and extensive menu make the wait worthwhile -- as do the generally friendly and competent servers. Try the juicy
carne asada, the famous green corn tamales or the mouth-watering crabmeat enchilada. You might just be moved to buy a T-shirt.

This is on my short list of places to take out of town guests in order to show them the best of Los Angeles. The food is top notch and the drinks are even better. The staff manages their limited capacity very well and usually there very little wait to be seated. Look out for the USC home game crowd, it can be pretty crowded after a game. I don't know why the Pasadena location seperated from the original, different ownership? The Pasadena location keeps up the high standards of the original.

I prefer the one in Pasadena, which was remodeled from an old Enligsh pub, because parking at the original location is a pain. The staff at the Pasadena El Cholo really pushes the margaritas because that's where the money is, but this is where I go unless I'm up for a trip to La Serenata.
