Philippe's is remarkable in many ways and may be one of the highest volume restaurants in the nation for a single location which speaks well for the food. The mess-hall layout adds to social interaction. You may be sitting next to a politician, a doctor or a homeless person who had a good day. I love it, it is LA in 1900. A "double-dipped roast beaf, cole slaw and 2 lemonades" is tatooed on my forehead for the convenience of the inveterate servers behind the counter.

I love going here for breakfast. The bacon and eggs are always hot and good! An coffee is 9 cents! Who needs more. Other food on the menu is equally good. Try the lamb sandwich. Great! Excellent cole slaw! It is the kind of place that makes going Downtown fun! Chinatown is right up the block for more good food!

If you are going to take your friends to only one restaurant this is the place. The Original French Dip Sandwich was invented here and has been perfected here. Ordering at the counter while the server takes your cash to the cashier is unique. Get a double dip, sit down in the most interesting dining room in LA. You will see every walk of life here and all in harmony. I love the trains on the wall. Simply the best in LA!

My first experience reminded me of my childhood in Huntington, WV; driving down 3rd Avenue through West Huntington and passing the Heiner's bakery in the midst of a fresh loaf coming out of the ovens. As I pulled in the Philippe's parking lot, I inhaled the homemade goodness my mouth was soon to enjoy. Was it crowded? A bit - a testament and, more importantly, an endorsement for Philippe to call themselves "Original." And the food is 2nd to none - not to be cliche, but it is.

I used to be a regular but quit going because it was so busy and the food was OK but not all that great. I would actually go to Cole's for a far superior beef dip--but only for the beef dip.
