The decor at El Coyote is a combination of fake-peeling-plaster and authentic Mexican folk art. What draws thousands of people to this unpretentious landmark, including fraternity guys, blue hairs and Hollywood rockers? It can't be the food--countless gallons of refried beans and rice laden with glutinous orange cheese. It must be the margaritas, the fiesta ambience and the prices. Those bent on finding good food are well advised to pass by El Coyote's overflowing combination plates, and its tostadas piled with mountains of canned peas and carrots.

Heard about El Coyote for years and wanted to check out the last restaurant actress Sharon Tate along with three of her friends ate before they were shot and stabbed to death a few hours later. The food was mediocre but the margartias were great. We wanted to sit at the booth Sharon and Co. sat in but it was occupied. Apparently, people obsessed with the case call and ask for that booth.

my dad used to wash dishes at el coyote right after the war.(1946) the story i remember is about how the help used to play poker in the kitchen after work and a big rat would sit on top of the refrigerator and watch them. needless to say, i never ate there.
