It's not just the hickory sauce I like, but the combination of the lettuce, sauce, mayo, cheese (optional), and sour pickle slices. If the pickles are removed from the sandwich, they leave behind a dill presence to balance the sauce. The chef will cook the fries to crispiness if you ask for it. It's not for everybody; the limited menu and strong personalities of the food and the servers are an occasion -- not just a quick lunch. Take out is sometimes more convenient than waiting for seating.

I thought it would be better. The whole wedge of Iceburg Lettuce on the burger is a classic, I guess. I thought it was too much lettuce. The sauce was kind of sweet. I'm not into sweet sauces on my burger. Thousand Island dressing is about as sweet as I go. Looks like it hasn't changed in years, which is great. Overall, a definite experience every Angelino needs at least once.

Best steak burgers. Super egg salad sandwich. Apple pie + ice cream is to die for. Evening shift guys are terrific. Usual stop after Laker games.

Don't really get the reputation of this place. It's good but there are many, many burgers in L.A. as good or better for cheaper.I had never been there until my friend came to visit from N.Y.C. He had read about it in a food guide. We were both underwhelmed by it.It's alright if your in the neighborhood but certainly not worth a trip of any distance.

Way over-priced and over-rated. Food isn't bad, but the hamburger stand where I went to in high school was just as good or better, and a whole lot cheaper and cooler. The fries are awful. Pie is the same as the rest of the food, not bad, but not worth the price or the attitude.

Best burger in the world, best ambiance, one of the last vestiges of authenticity in LA.

The hickory burger made me who I am today.
