Tables. Chairs. A flyer or two on the wall. Silver spooners, therefore, should give this place a wide berth -- the atmosphere is purely utilitarian. But those craving lightly spiced rotisserie chicken at prices that even the Joad family could afford have found the promised land at Zankou.

For around $5 you get the aforementioned chicken in quarters or halves served with pickled veggies, rice, pita bread and hummus. Additionally, Zankou offers all manner of kebabs, pita sandwiches, and a vegetarian plate with salad, hummus, grape leaves and pickled turnips.

Romantic? Elegant? Suave? None of the above -- but excellent, affordable grub is the Zankou mainstay.
