Portfolio Cafe
Paula Simper

This java joint is brewin' when it comes to taking your caffeine buzz to higher grounds. The friendly staff members at Portfolio Cafe jolt their espresso with more than 30 tasty flavors. If that's not enough bean buzz for ya, check out their Fu-Kola soda. It's like Coca-Cola, but with even more caffeine and tons more sugar. Or plug into cyberspace at the tres-trendy spot's free online computer while chugging a DepthCharge (a submarine-inspired coffee with a double shot of espresso.

If it's food you crave, make your stomach smile and sample one of Portfolio's LifeSaver bagels, jammed with sprouts, ham and tomatoes. If you don't eat meat, check out their vegan soups and soy/rice drinks.

This pad fits right in on the surrounding stretch of Funky Fourth Street. Be sure to scope out the electric, retro scene from the roomy outdoor patio. And why not support local artists and check out their art featured on the lime and ruby walls? Live blues and moody jazz tunes are featured on Friday and Saturday nights. Get there early to park on the street. -- Kim Lachance
