Although one is found in every major city in the country now -- in L.A.'s case, more than one -- these reliable steakhouses with the New Orleans heritage are no less appreciated than when they first left the Big Easy to conquer the world. Although a bit less sedate than some restaurants of this genre, these are nonetheless comfortable, clubby places with cozy booths and all the rich wood, white linen and red wine that is present in any self-respecting steakhouse from Brooklyn to Kansas City.
The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, adding to a consistently excellent dining experience. Shrimp lovers are strongly advised to start with the barbecued shrimp, bathed in an awesome reduction of white wine, butter and garlic that has been infused with some robust Louisiana spices (the house's crusty bread is ideal for mopping up the remains). Huge slices of beefsteak tomatoes with red onions and blue cheese are a welcome steakhouse cliché and Lyonnaise potatoes and creamed spinach are other familiar items that make worthy side dishes.
The steaks, custom-aged USDA Prime beef broiled at temperatures approaching 1800 degrees, are arguably the best in town. Served on hot platters in a pool of sizzling butter, they're a cardiologist's worst nightmare and a steak lover's dream. After awakening, give serious consideration to the chocolate bread pudding with caramel-pecan sauce. The relatively moderately priced wine list boasts a strong selection of California Cabernets. Meal for two: $80.
