Zip Fusion is adding more zip -- actually, a new zip code -- to its repertoire. The existing Korean sushi/fusion restaurant is in downtown's Arts District. This Friday, a second Zip Fusion location opens its doors -- and its unique eating concept -- to the Westside. In Korean, zip means "home," so it's fitting that this week the creative cuisine spot finds a new one to call its own.
The Zip concept is the brainchild of "fashion entrepreneur" Jason Ha. The idea, says Ha, is "to simulate both the palate and the senses." His venture succeeds on both counts with its electronic music ambiance, hip decor and imaginative, fresh dishes. At the grand opening guests will have three full hours to enjoy not only the vibe but also a gratis assortment of food samples.
The funky yet sleek new spot on Olympic Boulevard features Zip's signature hybrid rolls -- among them, the well-named Whisky & Soda Back Roll, which is made up of tuna, salmon,
tamago (egg), asparagus, crab,
gobo (edible burdock root) and avocado, sans rice. The equally packed Las Vegas Roll boasts avocado, crabmeat, cream cheese and three types of fresh fish. And just as hearty, but less eco-destructive than an SUV, the Traction Roll is quite simply a deep-fried California Roll.
