Eccentric and acclaimed chef Fred Eric helped put Los Feliz on the culinary map a decade ago when he opened Vida on Hillhurst Avenue. His Fred 62, busy 'round the clock, offers a few of the former's signature dishes but is a twist on an old-fashioned coffee house.
The clientele runs from button-down execs to pink-haired clubbers looking for some New Age diner cuisine that is consistently good. Designed by Fred Sutherland, the place has all the elements of a traditional American coffee shop, including a Toastamatic at every table, a long counter and ice cream fountain. Its booths, which resemble funky car seats, are one of many twists that remind you this is not quite like the coffee houses you hung out at as a kid.
The pun-filled menu is another reminder, with whimsical items like Bearded Mr. Frenchy (corn flake-crusted French toast), Thai Cobb salad, Juicy Lucy (a burger), Seoul Caesar (or Seouless Caesar, without the Korean dressing and kimchee) and MacDaddy & cheese. Dinner specials get more elaborate, but no less interesting.
