The Fowler boasts a collection of more than 150,000 art and ethnographic objects from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas. Ever-interesting exhibitions range from "The Art of Rice: Spirit and Sustenance in Asia" to "Botánica Los Angeles: Latino Popular Religious Art in the City of Angels" and "A Saint in the City: Sufi Arts of Urban Senegal."

Works in various media from the U.S., South Africa, India and Brazil showing how artists respond to HIV/AIDS and seek to raise awareness and inspire activism through their work.

The mythological water spirit, alternately portrayed as a mermaid and snake charmer, is celebrated in a multimedia exhibition made up of sculpture, painting, masks and other artifacts.
