"An Evening with Walter Mirisch," "2001 in 2008: A Cinematic Odyssey," "Solid Gould," "Little Murders" and other films coming to LA.

The Jets and the Sharks are getting ready to rumble again, in a new 70-millimeter print of the 1961 Oscar-winning musical "West Side Story," right with Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood, on Friday. The occasion? The UCLA Film & Television Archive's "An Evening With Walter Mirisch" at the Billy Wilder Theater. Mirisch, below, executive-produced the film and will discuss his memoir "I Thought We Were Making Movies, Not History" (cinema.ucla.edu). . . . The film academy's celebration of the 40th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" continues Wednesday with a "behind-the-scenes" look at the making of the sci-fi masterpiece. "2001 in 2008: A Cinematic Odyssey" features Tom Hanks and special effects whiz Douglas Trumbull, who was a photographic effects supervisor on the film, as hosts (oscars.org). . . . The Silent Movie Theatre continues its "Solid Gould" Friday screening series highlighting the films of Elliott Gould, one of the iconic stars of the early '70s. On tap is 1971's "Little Murders," Jules Feiffer's blackest of black comedies revolving around post-'60s disillusionment. Alan Arkin made his feature directorial debut with the film, which stars Gould as a photographer who falls for an interior decorator (silentmovietheatre.com). . . . The American Cinematheque's Aero Theatre in Santa Monica examines "Croatian Film Today" this weekend with a five-film festival kicking off Friday night with the U.S. premiere of Kristijan Milic's 2007 antiwar drama "The Living and the Dead" (aerotheatre.com).
