Beautious Far East Tropica on the Promenade.

Popular Drinks: You'll feel the need for something exotic here. Resist that urge! While the place falls into the highly applauded trend of visually pampering you with decor reminiscent of a cross between Charlie Chan in Singapore and what Casablanca should have looked like, the drinks show none of that inspiration. Their Singapore Sling consisted of Junipero (an excellent gin) sour mix and domestic cherry flavored brandy. While sweet, it was a waste of the Junipero, and the fellow behind the bar had to look up the recipe--even though it was on the menu.) Note to bars: If you want to impress your clientele with drink quality to match the food, use fresh fruit juices and simple syrup. Note to Monsoon: You need a seasoned tropical bartender.

Unique Drinks: Your expected list of signature contemporary martinis, as well as new takes on old classics.

Food: Full menu. Moderate to moderately pricey.

Seating: Stools and bar tables. Plenty of room. Pleasantly spacious.

Ambience: Monsoon has a romantic far east tropical-themed atmosphere bolstered not only with rattan, bamboo, skylights and lovely carvings-but also from the broad doors opening out into the music and bustle of the Promenade. Purely for atmosphere, Monsoon is worth a visit. Have a gin and tonic with Junipero.

Extras/Notes: Not exactly a bar of regulars, but amicable staff and clientele nonetheless.
