Save the Redwood
L.A. journalists and downtown denizens eagerly await the rebirth of the Redwood House.

New plank for the Redwood
It's a sad truth: So many of the great bars are gone. When you think of downtown L.A., you think about such old-timers as Al's Bar, Gorky's, Yi Me Loo and the
Redwood House, a 2nd Street bar that bore the distinction of being in close proximity to the Los Angeles Times offices. And it was good enough for JFK. When it closed last July, the veteran tavern had seen better days. Now it's in the hands of entrepreneur
Dev Dugal and former Golden Gopher GM
Christian Frizzell, and downtowners can look forward to the Redwood's rebirth in September. Designer
Fred Sutherland (Deep, Forty Deuce) is creating a nautical-themed watering hole with a penchant for pirates.... And speaking of downtown, the
Golden Gopher celebrates two years of making downtown hip tonight.
1-year-old celebrates
The world beat Thursday-night club
Mundial is throwing its one-year anniversary party tonight at Falcon on Sunset.... Heading out to Sin City on June 29 for the first-year anniversary party for the
Rainbow Bar & Grill. Rumor has it they're having a legs contest and
ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons may be on deck to judge.... On Sunday, party-throwers
the Alliance begin hosting Monday backgammon parties poolside at the Hollywood Roosevelt.
Resolute ownership
Party of the week winner goes to
Guy Starkman and
Cindy Margolis, who hosted an old-time carnival at their nightclub
Guy's North on Saturday. There to catch a performance by the colorful crew
the Ohmies were
Dayanara Torres, producer
Jimmy Jam, "American Idol's"
Constantine Maroulis,
Bill Bellamy and
Holly Robinson Peete. The event raised money for Resolve, a New York organization that helps couples with infertility problems.... Rat Pack fans won't want to miss this Sunday's
Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis tribute comedy act at
Frank & Dean's nightclub in Pasadena. Crooner
Danny DeLurgio does a mean Dean, and Jerry Lewis impersonator
David Wolf is a toothy marvel.
Seen on the scene
Digital Underground's Shock G (a.k.a.
Greg Jacobs) performed a piano set on Sunday at the Bistro in Burbank....
Courteney Cox celebrated her birthday with 10 pals, including
Kathleen Turner and hubby
David Arquette, at Il Sole last Thursday night....
La Dolce Vita in Beverly Hills celebrates 40 years tonight with a red-carpet shindig. Among the RSVPs are
Rose McGowan, Gina Gershon and
William Claxton....
DJ AM and
She Wants Revenge performed at Tuesday's T-Mobile Sidekick 3 bash at the Hollywood Palladium.
Memphis mission
Adam Brody, James Wilder, Eliza Dushku, Jeremy Piven and
Michelle Rodriguez were among the stars who turned out for last week's L.A. Mission fundraiser at Memphis in Hollywood. Hosted by
Rachel Bilson,
Chef Yossi and DJ
Jake Hoffman, the event raised $3,000.... And a belated birthday shout-out to
Mike Einziger of
Incubus, who was set to celebrate his 30th at LAX on Wednesday night.
