MK West Hollywood, CAI loved this show... just saw it this past weekend and am still singing the songs. The performances were great, the dancing outstaning, and the story was engaging. Just took a look at some of these other reviews, notices a comment about the second act 'sagging', couldn't disagree more. Second act opens with a heart-breaking Porter song I had never heard (Gay Paree) and ends with a rousing swordfight. This show has it all: romance, comedy, dancing, music... the sort of show you rarely find on Broadway anymore, let alone in LA. July 23, 2007
S Sadot Beverly Hills, CAGreat show! July 23, 2007
Rene Ringle Los Angeles, CAI am familiar with the original Can-Can, which has some of Porter's best songs but fails as a musical as the story never made any sense... I was AMAZED to see the show transformed at The Playhouse. It is funny, touching, and an all around great time. It feels as if they have found what the show always wanted to be. NOT TO BE MISSED! Bob Canning Petaluma, CAWhy should you see "Can-Can"? Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. Michelle Duffy. July 10, 2007
Gary Dobuzynski L.A., CADirector David Lee has injected a little needed pizzazz to the tired old libretto. It still limps a little in the second act -- it ALWAYS has. But Michelle Duffy as Pistache is every bit as good -- if not better -- than the Juliet Prowse version I saw many years ago. Someone here said she was "glorious." I second that. Beautiful voice, beautiful actress, beautiful woman. I've remember seeing her in "Putting it Together" at The Colony a few years ago, and I was very impressed. The Pasadena Playhouse crowd loved her. Her leading man, Kevin Early, is handsome and has a wonderful singing voice. And the choreography was fun and energetic. Wish there was more of it! July 7, 2007
hc Los Angeles, CAA totally schizophrenic show -- a first act that is buoyantly flawless, and a second act that is a flat souffle. It's clear why Can-Can has been problematic since its 1953 origins. And with the fine adaptation by Joel Fields and David Lee, act 2 deflates from the numerous high marks of the first act. The cast is exceptional and singing Broadway-calibre, ditto sets. But, oh, that dreary second act with one dull set piece after another leading to a creaky duel. Loved the play despite the deflation of the second act, which I hope they can bring to life, add some production numbers and pizzazz. July 7, 2007
barbara los angeles, caDidn't anyone read the script and discover this takes place in FRANCE? While we don't need heavy accents, we also don't want to feel the actors just drove in from the Valley. You can believe David Engel (Hilare) and Yvette Tucker (Claudine) are European. Kevin Earley is spectacular as Aristede. Michelle Duffy (Pistache) and the chorus girls are completely American. Duffy's renditions of Allez-Vous En and C'est Magnifique would be terrific if they weren't so jarringly American with a few French words. Someone please send her a few recordings of French vocal artists. Sets, Costumes and various production values are terrific. Choreography ranges from so-so to exciting although the dancers could be cleaner and precise. Amir Talai as Boris is perfect and nearly steals every scene. A thoroughly enjoyable production that misses being truly great. Return to Can-Can details
