Fat Pig
geffenplayhouse.com Readers' rating: Reader reviews: Write a review | Read more reviews The Geffen Playhouse presents the West Coast premiere of Neil LaBute's spare parable about a man struggling between peer pressure and his plus-size girlfriend. Jo Bonney ably directs a cast that now includes Ashlie Atkinson, who originated the role to which the title refers, but the play lacks the
queasy, compelling force of LaBute's stronger work.

quin new york city, ny'Fat Pig' is a LaBute love story, deep emotions, memorable lines, and wicked, bad wit. Tom (Scott Wolf)loves Helen, but, not himself enough to be bold and brave. Carter (Chris Pine) as Tom’s best friend, is the epitome of the word smarmy but knows himself, and Tom, quite well. Jeanine (Andrea Anders)is but underplays her anger and confusion over Tom’s choice of Helen. Kirsten Vangsness is so perfect as Helen, it is as if she is wearing her as a skin, not playing a character. Her final monologue, that evisceration of self, isn’t an interpretation of the playwright; you can hear the fabric of her soul tear. Her words sink into your heart. This play is one of love, of choice, of knowing yourself enough to make a decision, good or bad, and you ask yourself; is unrequited love better than never loving at all?
