Clearly inspired by the smashing success of Hairspray, Cry-Baby’s creators have musicalized another John Waters cult favorite, and done so with cheer-worthy results. Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan’s outrageously funny book is far more John Waters-esque than the Broadway adaptation of Hairspray. Don’t be surprised if Cry-Baby brings Tony winning Harriet Harris another Tony. Stealing every scene she’s in is Alli Mauzey as the adorably deranged Lenora. (It's exciting to see an L.A. favorite making it big on Broadway!). The stellar leading man, (Angeleno) James Snyder, electrifies the stage (a la Elvis) in his many rocking hip-swiveling numbers, and is sure to become a big Broadway name--and heartthrob--once Cry-Baby opens there. The creators know exactly what they’re doing, and the result is worthy of an unabashed rave. Read my full review at www.LAStageScene.com.

This was such fun, it's going to do very well in New York! I agree with most of McNulty's comments, and I also think they need to replace the lead actor b4 NY, but other than that it was first rate. Just too bad we have to drive to La Jolla to see a quality new musical, or suffer through local drivel like "Atlanta" or "13"

Cry-Baby is a welcome surprise in an mostly lackluster season of new musicals. Great songs, great sets, and fantastic choreograophy should collect this musical a set of Tonys! While the show is not quite Broadway ready (the first act needs tightening), it should be in fantastic shape before it reaches the great white way.
