John Waters' camp sensibility has been virtually drained and his gentle sendup of 1950s teen movies is played bizarrely straight in this musical adaptation of his 1990 film. Still, there's plenty of theatrical pleasure to be had in this rockabilly-inflected tale about a Baltimore beauty who falls for a juvenile delinquent heartthrob of the 1954 variety.
