Although his material sometimes outstrips the limitations of the small Attic Theatre space, director Derek Charles Livingston does a Herculean task in this intermittently unwieldy but nonetheless rigorous production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1971 rock opera, spearheaded here by the marvelous Scott Charles in a dazzling eponymous turn.

With a cast made up of men & women of various ages, races, & sexual orientations, this is clearly a Jesus Christ Superstar for the 21st century. Though the show itself will never top a list of my favorites musicals, the Attic’s production has been put together with talent & imagination. Scott Charles acts & sings the difficult title role with power & charisma & an amazing high wail of a voice. As Judas, Blanche Ramirez demonstrates a rock soprano capable of standing up the huge demands of the role. Though not all the performers are quite up to the vocal demands of the score, they are a talented & committed ensemble: Director Derek Charles Livingston has created some powerful images onstage. Richard Berent does fine work as musical director as do the offstage band, & it is refreshing to hear unamplified voices in the Attic’s small space. Read my full review at www.StageSceneLA.com.
