Los Angeles premiere of the musical tribute to the larger-than-life 1960s rock icon Janis Joplin. Told through her words and music, the show was inspired by Joplin's sister Laura's book of the same title. Conceived, adapted and directed by Randal Myler, with music direction by Sam Andrew, founding member of Big Brother and the Holding Company. Mary Bridget Davies and Andra Mitrovich alternate performances as Janis Joplin the performer; Marisa Ryan portrays the private Joplin.

it was a total blast and the audience went nuts at the end.

This performance was absolutely flat--I left at the intermission. Janis is played in 2 parts, sung and written. The spoken/written Janis was inspiring, definately bringing Janis to life in a lovely performance, singing Janis was okay, good with Janis mannerisms, but seemed to hold back her performance in many areas. Music was okay to good, although I suspect recorded. Overall, save your money, buy a dvd/cd of the original Janis and her book of letters written by her sister. Janis deserves something better than this; you do too.

What an entertaining show! I loved the music and knew most of the songs (I was born in 1961). It made me understand what an intelligent and tortured soul Janis was. I went home and downloaded lots of Janis songs. Entertaining and interesting. I do recommend this show.
