Dancing: Mars vs. Venus

Kelly Monaco and professional dance partner Alec Mazo won ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."    Adam Larkey / ABC

ABC, Day One. Missed the big exec session with entertainment chief Stephen McPherson. Missed the "Boston Legal" panel with David E. Kelley. Missed the "Crumbs" panel. It's a sitcom. Saw the "Hot Properties" panel, saw the "Freddie" panel. They're sitcoms.

"Dancing with the Stars," so popular this summer that ABC's bringing it back for midseason, is now having a panel. Earlier in the day McPherson heard from the press about viewer complaints having to do with the show's judging and result, the feeling that finalist John O'Hurley out-danced the winner Kelly Monaco, who happens to be from the ABC soap "General Hospital." Now the makers and winning dance team are onstage to defend the show's rules and result from members of the press. The mood is tense. Let's listen:

Judge Bruno Tonioli: "Kelly, if you see the first performance and the last performance, the journey that she took over the six weeks was extraordinary. ... She worked, she got better, better, better ... So I stand by my 10."

Winner Kelly Monaco: "I think either way someone would have had backlash. I think there are fans everywhere of all different types of dancing, and dance is in the eye of the beholder. John and I -- he's on Mars, I'm on Venus. I did my job, I did what Alec taught me to do and I left it for the audience to decide."

Judge Len Goodman: "We're judging two couples in the final. We've never seen their routines... we see it at the same moment as you."

Kelly's pro partner Alec Mazo: "When we do our routine, when we dance, we want to make sure that the floor craft is perfect. If on TV you see a different angle, that may have seemed like there was a small mistake, [but] the judges wouldn't have necessarily seen that, because I was blocking them."

Kelly: "Everyone's got there favorites. I do not hold anything personally, I'm not going to go home and cry because someone didn't like my dancing ... This is fun for me. If you don't like what I did, that's OK, that's your opinion."

Remember Me?

 What is it?

The stars. The suits. The shrimp. Twice a year, TV reporters and critics from around the country come to Los Angeles to get a sneak peek at the new television shows and hear from the people who put them on the air. This summer, home base for the semi-annual convention, sponsored by the Television Critics Assn., is the Beverly Hilton, but parties are taking place around town. The Times' Paul Brownfield is there and weighing in with an online critic's notebook.
